Electric cars offer genuine benefits — but also real compromises. Here's an honest assessment of whether an EV makes sense for your life right now.
The EV market has matured enormously since 2020. Range anxiety, while real, has become less of an issue for most drivers as battery technology improves and the charging network expands. But 'most drivers' isn't everyone — and the honest answer to whether an EV is right for you depends entirely on your circumstances.
Range Reality
Manufacturer WLTP range figures are typically 20–30% higher than real-world driving in UK conditions. Factor in motorway speeds, cold weather, and ancillary loads (heating, headlights) and a car quoted at 280 miles might realistically deliver 200. For most daily commuters this is irrelevant — but for regular long-distance drivers, it matters.
"Home charging changes everything. If you can charge overnight at home, running costs per mile drop to around 3–4p — roughly a third of petrol equivalent. If you rely solely on public charging, the economics change significantly."
Depreciation
Early EVs (2018–2021) have depreciated sharply as newer, longer-range models have arrived. This creates opportunity for used buyers — but also risk. Battery degradation is a real concern on high-mileage examples; always check battery health via the car's own diagnostic read-out.
Who Should Buy One
- You have off-street parking and can charge at home
- Your daily mileage is under 150 miles
- You have access to a workplace charger
- You make occasional long journeys (not daily)
- You want lower running costs and don't mind occasional planning
