Is ChatGPT Good for Vehicle Information?

Alfie Hill|1 Sep 2026|2 min read

AI is a brilliant tool for researching cars, but buying the right car often comes down to things that aren't obvious online.

What AI Is Good At

Over the last few years, AI has become incredibly powerful. You can ask it almost anything.

  • What car should I buy?
  • Is a BMW reliable?
  • What's the best family SUV?
  • What's the cheapest car to insure?

Most of the time you'll get a really good answer because AI is brilliant at gathering huge amounts of information and presenting it in a way that's easy to understand.

Where Things Get More Complicated

The problem is that buying a car isn't always that simple. After spending over 10 years working as a technician, MOT tester and garage owner, I've learned that the right answer is usually hidden in the details.

For example, if you ask AI 'What's the most reliable SUV under £10,000?', it might recommend something like a Kia Sportage. Generally speaking, that's a good recommendation.

But what if...

  • You only drive 3 miles to work every day?
  • The car has missed major services?
  • The timing belt should've been replaced years ago?
  • The fuel filter has never been changed?
  • The DPF has a history of problems?
  • The MOT history shows the same advisories every year?
  • The vehicle has obviously been poorly maintained?

Those are the sorts of things that can completely change whether a car is actually a good buy.

The Things That Matter Most

In my opinion, the biggest part of buying a used car isn't choosing the model. It's understanding the individual vehicle you're looking at.

  • Service history
  • MOT history
  • Previous maintenance
  • Driving style of the previous owner
  • Engine condition
  • Whether the vehicle suits your lifestyle

These are things that often only become obvious when you know what to look for or you've spent years seeing the same faults in a workshop.

Why We Combine Data & Experience

That's why I don't think the future is AI instead of mechanics. I think it's data-driven matching and real workshop experience working together.

At ALFA PRESTIGE we use a proprietary rating algorithm to narrow down suitable vehicles based on your budget, lifestyle and requirements. Then we apply real-world mechanical experience to explain the ownership costs, common faults, maintenance history and whether the individual vehicle is actually worth buying.

"Data helps you find cars. Experience helps you avoid buying the wrong one."

My Honest Opinion

AI is one of the best tools ever created for researching vehicles, and I use it myself every day. But buying a used car isn't just about finding information online. It's about understanding how that information applies to the exact vehicle sitting in front of you.

The best buying decisions happen when technology is backed up by genuine automotive experience. That's exactly what ALFA PRESTIGE has been built to provide.
