My top 3 automatic cars under £10,000 based on my own experience and industry data.
BEST AUTOMATICS UNDER 10K
So this is based on my knowledge and industry data, ive narrowed this down to 3 but there is a lot out there, ive tried to keep things like semi autos and DCT’s out of this as this is just what I think are the best and smoothest automatics out there for under 10k. One thing I will say is you are more likely to pay over 2k for an automatic rather than the manual equivalent of the same car.
1. Mazda 3
For 10k you will probably get something that is around the 2017 mark and low mileage. Mazda don't always get the attention they deserve, but mechanically they're one of my favourite manufacturers. The Mazda 2.0 petrol engine is chain driven, naturally aspirated and doesn't rely on lots of complicated technology.
The automatic gearbox is a traditional torque converter, which I generally prefer over many dual-clutch systems for long-term reliability. It's smooth, dependable and suits the car perfectly.
2. BMW X3
Loads of different engines depending on your budget, very reliable gearbox and a lovely smooth drive. If you could get an M sport then even better just for upgraded features. The build quality of these are very good also the only downside is the annual road tax abit more expensive than your average car. A BMW X3 can be a fantastic buy for under £10,000, but remember you're buying a premium car that's depreciated, not a cheap car to maintain. Routine servicing, tyres and brakes will still cost more than they would on a Ford or Toyota. If it's been looked after properly, I'd happily own one. If the service history is patchy, I'd walk away and wait for a better example.
3. Volvo V40 D4 Geartronic Automatic
I think the Volvo V40 is one of the most underrated hatchbacks on the used car market. Most people immediately look at the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series or Mercedes A-Class because of the badge, but from a mechanical point of view I'd happily recommend a well-maintained V40.
If I was buying one, I'd personally be looking for the 2.0 D4 diesel with the Geartronic automatic gearbox. The engine has plenty of power, they're comfortable on long journeys and they're capable of covering high mileages if they've been serviced properly.
Like any diesel, they suit people who actually drive them. If you're only doing short journeys every day I'd probably point you towards a petrol instead, as DPF issues can become expensive if they never get chance to regenerate.
