Technician Overview

One of the biggest things we see with used VAG vehicles isn't necessarily a mechanical design fault — it's important service items being missed throughout the vehicle's life.

A car can have a stamped service history every year and still be missing several expensive maintenance jobs.

Don't Just Look for an Oil Service

Owners trying to reduce running costs will sometimes ask garages to carry out the cheapest possible annual service. That can mean additional scheduled maintenance gets repeatedly pushed back or completely forgotten.

Depending on the model and drivetrain, check for evidence of:

  • Brake fluid changes
  • DSG gearbox servicing
  • Haldex servicing
  • Differential oil changes
  • Transfer box oil changes
  • Air filter replacement
  • Fuel filter replacement
  • Spark plug replacement

Intervals vary depending on the exact model, engine, gearbox and drivetrain, so these should always be checked against the manufacturer's schedule for that particular vehicle.

Why It Matters

Missing these jobs might save an owner money at the time, but it can create much larger bills later. For example:

1

DSG Oil Not Changed

Can contribute to gearbox and mechatronic wear.

2

Haldex Oil Neglected

Can lead to problems with the AWD system and Haldex pump.

3

Differential or Transfer Box Oils Ignored

Can accelerate wear in expensive drivetrain components.

4

Old Spark Plugs

Can cause poor running and misfires, particularly on higher-output TSI engines.

5

Fuel Filter Neglected

Can put unnecessary strain on the fuel system.

Technician Insider Tip

When someone advertises a VAG car as having “full service history”, we don't take that at face value. Go through the invoices and digital service records and find out what was actually done at each service.

There is a massive difference between “serviced every year” and “maintained properly to the manufacturer's full schedule.”

Technician Verdict

On VAG vehicles, especially DSG and four-wheel-drive models, detailed service history can be worth more than low mileage. We'd rather buy a correctly maintained higher-mileage car than a low-mileage example that's spent years having nothing more than oil and filter changes.
