Technician Overview
The 2.0 TDI Kodiaq is a strong all-rounder and, if it's been maintained properly, they can cover serious mileage without much trouble. The biggest thing we look for with these is proof that the correct servicing has actually been carried out, rather than just seeing a stamp in the service book.
Service History Is Everything
There are a few important service items that are easily overlooked:
- Fuel filter: around every 40,000 miles
- DSG gearbox service: around every 40,000 miles on applicable wet-clutch DSG gearboxes
- Haldex service: around every 40,000 miles on 4x4 models
- Air filter: around every 60,000 miles
- Cambelt: commonly around 5 years / 140,000 miles, depending on exact engine specification and manufacturer schedule
We'd always recommend checking the schedule against the specific registration/VIN, rather than assuming it has been done.
Front Crankshaft Oil Seal
One issue we see is oil leaking from the front crankshaft/main seal area.
Look underneath the engine and around the cambelt-side of the engine for signs of fresh oil. A small misting is very different to an active leak, so ideally this wants inspecting properly before purchase.
AdBlue System Faults
The AdBlue system can become expensive when faults start appearing.
Warning messages such as “AdBlue fault — engine will not restart in XXX miles” shouldn't be ignored.
Problems can come from sensors, pumps, injectors or other parts of the SCR/AdBlue system, and diagnosis is important before simply replacing components.
Water Pump
Water pump problems can occur, but this is less of a concern on a vehicle where the cambelt and water pump have already been replaced correctly at the appropriate interval.
Check the coolant level from cold and look for evidence of coolant staining or previous leaks around the cambelt/water pump area.
DPF — Check How the Car Has Been Used
The 2.0 TDI suits longer-distance driving.
A Kodiaq that has spent its life doing motorway miles can actually be a better buy than a lower-mileage example that has only ever done short school runs and town journeys.
Repeated short journeys can prevent the DPF from completing regenerations properly, eventually causing:
- High soot loading
- Frequent regenerations
- DPF warning lights
- Oil dilution
- EGR/DPF related faults
Technician Verdict
Buy on condition and service history rather than mileage alone. A properly serviced motorway-mileage Kodiaq would often be our preference over a neglected low-mileage one.
