Technician Overview
The naturally aspirated 1.6 petrol Focus is generally a straightforward engine, but there's one fault we specifically look for because it can easily be mistaken for an ignition problem.
Coolant Leak Around the Spark Plugs
There are coolant/core plugs around the spark plug area which can corrode over time. When they begin leaking, coolant can collect down inside the spark plug wells.
This can then cause:
- Engine misfires
- Coil-pack problems
- Rough running
- Engine management light
- Damp or corrosion around the spark plugs
How We Check Them
A quick workshop check is to:
- Remove the ignition coil packs.
- Shine a light down into each spark plug well.
- Check for coolant, moisture or staining around the plugs.
If there is coolant sitting down there, don't automatically assume the coil pack itself is the original cause of the misfire.
Technician Verdict
These are generally decent petrol engines, but on a viewing we'd always pull the coils and check down the plug wells. It takes minutes and can uncover a fault that isn't immediately obvious during a short test drive.
